The question
How much time do builders lose searching for tools instead of building?
Every few weeks someone asks me for the best tool for landing pages, prompts, icons, boilerplates, databases, agents, automation or deployment. There is no shortage of tools. The difficulty is finding the right one while your attention should already be on the thing you are building.
Context
BuilderLab is a curated library of AI tools, open-source software, prompts, templates and learning resources, organised so someone can go from idea to shipped product with less time spent on search.
Building it
The first version is a curated directory rather than a social platform or a marketplace. The product decisions are about quality, structure and speed:
- Organize tools by the jobs builders are trying to do
- Keep entries short enough to scan quickly
- Prioritize practical usefulness over popularity
- Make search and filtering feel fast
- Decide carefully what gets in, since a dumping ground helps nobody
Collecting links is easy. Deciding what deserves to be included is the actual work.
What surprised me
People do not only want the best tool. They want to stop worrying that they picked the wrong one, which is why the shortlist matters more than the catalogue.
What I learned
Curation is the feature. A smaller list respects the reader’s attention and is easier to keep current, which matters because builder tools go stale within months.
